Sustainability at saturn petcare

Long-term planning is a tradition at saturn petcare. Our aim is to preserve resources and retain our employees as we move into the future. Sustainability is part of our identity as a company that has produced top-quality products for more than 30 years. As part of heristo aktiengesellschaft, we are naturally committed to observing the philosophy of our parent company.

We understand sustainability to be a continuous process of improvement.

We want to actively push forward our efforts for greater sustainability together with our employees, business partners and other stakeholders.

Our goal is to systematize and further develop our sustainability efforts on an ongoing basis.

We believe that social values such as human rights, work ethics, environmental protection, combating corruption and compliance with national and international laws, regulations and standards are our clear duty and responsibility.

We want to make our contribution to achieving the „Sustainable Development Goals“, and believe that as a producer of pet food we have an obligation to achieve the following goals in particular:

GOAL 3:     Good health and well-being
GOAL 8:     Humane working conditions and economic growth
GOAL 12:   Sustainanble consumption and production

Business
  • Our suppliers are an important element of our sustainability strategy. We focus on long-term partnerships and already take into account compliance with sustainability aspects as well as compliance with international guidelines and standards for labour rights and the environment in our supplier selection process and our risk assessments.
  • Minimising wasted resources due to production losses and overproduction is important to us. In agreement with our customers, we operate our own factory outlet store and support animal shelters to avoid wasting any high-quality products.
  • Using 2020 as a reference year, we aim to reduce the number of end consumer complaints we receive by 5 percent by 2022 and thus further improve the standard of quality for our customers.
Social
  • How we behave towards one another in our owner-operated family company is governed by the values of heristo aktiengesellschaft: “fair-reliable-innovative”. These values apply to all of our employees equally. We plan ahead and are already training employees for our future.
  • Our employees make their own contribution and are encouraged to make suggestions and offer ideas for improvements and to help us implement them.
  • saturn petcare, as well as the entire heristo aktiengesellschaft, has been a member of SEDEX since 2019. The majority of our packaging suppliers are also already members of Sedex – including 100% of our primary packaging suppliers.
  • Using 2019 as a reference year, we aim to reduce the number of reportable accidents per 1 million hours worked by 5 percent by 2022. The well-being of our employees is important to us.
Environment
  • We reduce the amount of packing materials to the best of our abilities. Due to the lack of alternatives at this time, we currently rely on minimising the use of established packaging materials. Product safety is the number one priority for us. All of the cardboard we use is already FSC or PEFC certified.
  • The sites in Bremen and Hattem are certified according to the ASC and MSC standards and all of the egg products we process are 100 percent KAT certified in the upstream processing stages.
  • We want to continuously improve our energy efficiency. Our sustainable energy management system at the site in Bremen has been certified in accordance with the ISO 50001 standard since 2013 and we regularly raise awareness for this theme amongst our employees using an e-learning course on energy management. In addition, we work together with energy efficiency networks in order to better exchange ideas and information on energy-related improvements and innovative trends.
  • Building on the energy savings that we were able to achieve in the past, we now aim to reduce our specific energy consumption for the production of compressed air (in kWh/m3 ) by a further 5 percent by 2022, in comparison to the reference year of 2019.
